Derby Resignalling – have you picked up your timetable?

Temporary timetables, which will be in place for 79 days while the biggest upgrade to the railway in Derby since the Victorian era takes place, are now available.
Network Rail, East Midlands Trains and CrossCountry are working together to make it as simple and convenient as possible for customers to continue to travel whilst this huge upgrade takes place in and around Derby station between 22nd July and 7th October.
It is also a key part of the biggest upgrade of the Midland Main Line since it was completed in 1870, which will support better journeys between Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham and London.
Temporary timetables are available for:
- CrossCountry services to and from the North, South West, South and Wales
- East Midlands Trains services between Sheffield and London St Pancras (Timetable 1)
- East Midlands Trains services between Matlock and Newark Castle (Timetable 3)
- East Midlands Trains services between Crewe and Derby (Timetable 5)
Timetables also include times and pick up and drop off locations for all rail replacement bus services so customers can plan their journey from start to finish.
To view your timetable, visit www.derby2018.co.uk or pick one up in your local station. All other timetables are unaffected and the current timetable will continue to operate.

Derby Resignalling is the biggest rail investment in Derby station for decades and will create a modern and improved track layout at a station which has seen passenger numbers double in the last 20 years.
It will remove the current bottlenecks outside the station which delays trains and provide more reliable and punctual journeys for passengers who travel from as far afield as Aberdeen and Plymouth as well as right across the Midlands and to London.
The station itself was modernised in 2013 but the existing track layout has not been improved since it was installed nearly 50 years ago and the signalling has not been significantly upgraded since it was installed in the 1960s. Regular maintenance has kept the station performing well but as track and signalling work together they are both being replaced and upgraded at the same time.
Work is already well underway to build a new platform opposite platform six and this will open in early July. Following this, 79 days of carefully planned engineering work will begin on 22nd July and finish on Sunday 7th October. During this time:
- 17 kilometres of track will be replaced with a new and improved layout
- 79 new sets of points will be installed (which allow trains to switch between tracks)
- 55 new signals will be installed (the railway’s version traffic lights)
- Nine new gantries will be built (large overhead structures which hold signals and cables)
- 150,000 tonnes of ballast will be laid (loose stones which the rail sits on top of)
Changes to journeys vary depending on when and where passengers are travelling but journeys to and from Crewe, Matlock, Birmingham, Nottingham, Sheffield and London will be affected at some point while the work is carried out.
